Welcome to Reception

In literacy, we have been looking at the sounds that the letters of the alphabet make.  The children have been developing their phonetic knowledge through playing games on the interactive whiteboard and engaging in shared reading using big books.  They have found letters in the stories and have listened for different sounds in words.  They are on their way to becoming readers!

In Maths, the children have been learning about different shapes.  During a lesson, they became 'shape detectives'.  We looked around the classroom and walked around the outside area to see what shapes we could find in the environment.  The children spotted a fantastic range of shapes in interesting places.  When a child found a shape, they used the digital camera to a photo of it.  The children used rich mathematical language to describe the shapes and some of their properties.  This proved to be a very engaging and thought-provoking lesson!

We have been learning about Ourselves.  We discussed what makes each of us special and unique.  The children then painted a self-portrait.  This activity enabled each child to develop a positive sense of self!

In our first dance lesson, we explored different types of music and how our bodies can move.  The tempo of the music was fast and slow and the children decided which was the best way to move.  They danced individually and with a partner.  The children really enjoyed this session!
