Numeracy

At SCPS we aim to make number work of all kinds fun for the children so that they build their confidence with the various processes and are receptive to further development in the subject.
Practical work is the starting point and practical activities remain significant throughout the whole school.
The school uses the Ginn Abacus mathematics scheme as a basis for our curriculum but this is enriched with additional material from a variety of sources.
Class teachers are continually monitoring and assessing the children’s progress. From Y1 standardised Numeracy tests are used to assess progress, analyse difficulties and assist development.
Homework is generally used to reinforce class work and children should be able to complete the tasks unassisted in the allocated time.
Parents can greatly assist their child’s mathematical development by involving the child in number processes within their daily lives and playing mathematical games.
