At
Snaresbrook
College
pupils begin to learn Latin in
Year 3 and by the time they leave the school they will
have completed the “Minimus” course. This is a
Cambridge University Press course written especially
for 7 to 11 year olds. It is based on a real family (and their pets) who
lived at Vindolanda Fort near
Hadrian’s Wall at the beginning of the second century
AD. The stories about this family have been developed from the content of
hundreds of writing tablets found at Vindolanda. These writing tablets have
been voted the “Top Treasure” at the British Museum in London.
The course is an
introduction to Latin and will also help
pupils to understand English grammar and extend their
English vocabulary. English derivatives from Latin words
are an important feature of every chapter.
The children will also
learn something of what it meant to be invaded by the Romans, to serve in
the Roman army and to be the wife or
child of someone serving in the army abroad.
